Bergman Takes Skagit 410 Victory With Last Corner Pass
After a week off thanks to mother nature Seth returned to Skagit Speedway piloting the Mike Anderson owned number 18 Tri County Truss 410 sprint car. This was Seth’s first drive in a sprint car for another team, and we were all extremely excited to see how Seth would do driving for one of the top teams out of Skagit.
Qualifying started the evening and Seth’s time of 11.807 was good enough for fifth position. Travis Rutz timed in fastest and at the end of qualifying it was determined that the top 6 would be inverted for the main event.
Seth’s heat race saw him starting in third position inside good friend Colton Heath and behind Toni Lutar, Barry Martinez. As the green flag dropped Heath got a nice start and was able to get around Seth going into turn one. Seth quickly settled in behind the front three as he did his best to get himself acquainted with the new car. On lap three Heath lost control of his car going into turn one and ended up in the wall which resulted in Seth moving up to third. On the restart Seth moved to the top of the track on turns one and two to see how the car would perform but Danielle Huson was able to pass Seth on the bottom and for the remainder of the race he settled in behind Huson to take home fourth.
Starting positions for the A-Main reverted back to final positions from qualifying and with an inverted grid Seth started the main event in third position with Eric Fisher and Mitch Olson on the front row. As the green flag dropped Seth did not get a good start as Jess Whitney and Travis Rutz raced around Seth going into the top of turn one. As the race settled down Seth was able to get back into his rhythm as the car was becoming better and better with each lap on the middle to bottom sections of the track.
On lap five Seth was able to get by Whitney as the 88 got extremely lose going into turn one, and Seth then began the pursuit of the number 26 Travis Rutz. For the next three laps Seth weaved his way around the lapped traffic and on lap nine Rutz’s car gave out as Seth moved up into third as the yellow came out. As we went green Seth was hot on the heels of Eric Fisher and two laps later Seth put a great slide job on Fisher going into turns one and two and was able to move up into second. One lap later the races first red flag came out after a wreck involving Corey Chamberlain.
On the restart Seth was able to quickly get by back-marker Cam Smith and began the chase for leader Mitch Olson who had led from the opening lap. Olson was extremely fast in the clean air and on lap 14 racing was halted once again for a caution. As the drivers rounded for the restart Seth looked to dive to the inside but it was to no avail as Olson quickly raced away until the second red of the race came out on lap seventeen for Barry Martinez after a horrible wreck which saw his car end up on the high fence going into turn one. It was an absolutely horrible wreck and thankfully Barry walked away ok.
After the wreck had been cleared racing resumed and Colton Heath was hot on Seth’s heels. For the next eight laps Seth drove a consistent line and was able to hold Heath at bay as he threw everything at Seth in an attempt to take second. As the white flag came out Olson got stuck behind Kevin Smith and all of a sudden a window of opportunity opened. As they raced up the back straight away Olson’s unassailable lead had been reduced to four car lengths and as they entered the final two turns Seth set himself up for the most memorable slide job of his career as Olson stayed in the middle of the track behind Smith. That was the opening Seth needed as he slid underneath Olson and was able to hold him off to take the checkered victory.
It was a tremendous finish to an extremely exciting night or racing and to top it off Seth was able to take home his maiden 410 victory at his home track.
